100th Day of School - February 22, 2010 Crazy Hat Day
To celebrate our 100th day of school, we will take part in our annual Crazy Hat Day. Each student is required to create a crazy hat decorated with exactly 100 items. A ready made hat can be used as a base. The hat can be decorated with a specific theme in mind. Parental support and involvement is encouraged. However, please remember that the Crazy Hat should be your child’s own creation. See Ms. Napoli, our academic coach, if you need assistance. All Crazy Hats must be worn on the 100th day of school. The 100th day of school is Monday, February 22, 2010.
This year there will be a twist to our Crazy Hat contest. Each class will decide which hats meet the contest criteria. Only those hats will be showcased on a judging table in each classroom. A panel of judges will come to each class and judge the hats that have made it to the judging table. The student who created the winning hat will receive a gift card to Barnes & Noble.
The criteria for the judging contest will be:
· a hat decorated with exactly 100 items
· creativity
· child’s own creation
The students are also required to bring in items to create a “Hundreds Museum”. The students will bring 100 items in a zip lock bag so that it can be displayed on a bulletin board in their classroom. Students should begin bringing in their collections this week. All collections must be displayed prior to the 100th day of school.
In lieu of our 100th day of school assembly program, we will be conducting a school-wide math investigation entitled, “Getting up to Move is Cool on the 100th day of School”. Each class will predict if 100 steps will take them to various local businesses. The class will walk to that location and count how many actual steps it took them to get there. When the students arrive at that business, they will enter and wish the owners and workers a “Happy 100th Day of School”. Students will present certificates and crazy prizes to our community friends. When the students return to their classrooms, they will complete their math investigations and determine if their prediction was correct. Of course, parent participation is vital for a successful day. Therefore, parents are encouraged to create their own crazy hat to assist and cheer on classes as they walk to their destination. A detailed letter will follow to let you know what time your child’s class will walk to their destination.
Looking forward to a fabulous 100th day of School!
